· Second order nonlinear optical interactions in single crystals and periodically poled crystals : second harmonic generation, sum frequency generation, difference frequency generation and other optical parametric frequency conversion processes.

· All-optical switching : Based on second order cascaded phase shift in organic/ inorganic single crystals, periodically poled ferroelectric crystals and poled molecular systems.

· Optical properties of excited states : Excited state spectroscopy, dynamics and optical limiting properties in photo-induced charge transfer molecules.

· Solid laser media : Excited state spectroscopy and dynamics of excited states in rare earth/ transition metal doped crystals and glasses, including frequency upconversion.
